Phillies Partner With Comcast Spectacor To Develop South Philly Sports Complex By 2028
While the Sixers are making plans to leave the South Philly Sports Complex, two of the other teams are teaming up to develop it. The Flyers had previously announced plans to improve the Sports Complex. Now, the Phillies have announced they are partnering with Comcast Spectacor to develop the Sports complex into a “world-class, live-work-play sports and entertainment district.”
The plan will be rolled out in multiple phases. In Phase One they will develop the lots between Pattison Ave and the Wells Fargo Center. They plan to build a concert venue, a hotel, retail shops, and a plaza, and to upgrade Xfinity Live. Phase 2 will expand over into the Phillies lots. That will include another hotel, more shops and restaurants, residential buildings, and a “Phillies Plaza.”
As it stands now, the area around the Sports Complex is not super developed. Restaurant options are limited. The addition of Live Casino added some life to the area. But it is still somewhat lacking in things to do besides going to the games or Xfinity Live. Now the plan will be to add tons of retail and dining options for fans attending a game at one of the venues. Creating more of a destination as opposed to a place to just attend sporting events or concerts.
It will significantly reduce parking spaces, and opportunities to tailgate though. That said, there are plenty of other lots around the area. For now, the plans only include the Phillies and Wells Fargo lots. Leaving the Eagles’ side and some of the adjacent lots untouched.
John Middleton made the following statement in the Phillies official press release:
“When I think about what makes Philadelphia unique, it’s our incredible fan base and tight-knit community. This project focuses on expanding that community and bringing in more residents, workers, and visitors. With the creation of new spaces and experiences, Philadelphians and visitors will have more opportunities to celebrate the passion and pride we have for our city and our teams.”
They plan to finish Phase 1 of the plan by 2028. Comcast Spectacor already owns the development rights in those lots, making it far easier for the plan to progress. Phase 2 is more up in the air as they work with the City and the surrounding communities to get proper approvals.
The Sixers, as of now, have not changed their plans to move out of the Sports Complex. They are still working towards their plans to develop a new arena in Center City.
