LISTEN: Unreleased Bowie ’78 Spectrum Performance Featured In New Box Set
A previously unreleased live version of David Bowie playing “Suffragette City” at The Spectrum in April of 1978 will be included on a forthcoming box set, A New Career in a New Town (1977–1982), out September 29th. Take a listen.
This box set is the third in a series that will cover Bowie’s career. Previous installments included 1969 to 1973 and 1974 to 1976.
Although the April 29th, 1978 Spectrum gig was one of a few shows that provided the material for his 1978 live album, Stage, this version of “Suffragette City” never made it onto Stage or its 2005 reissue.
The song exists at the top of this online article in Rolling Stone. It’s a romping, aggressive version of the song. Bowie has a long history with Philly, Bowie Live At The Tower was recorded at the legendary Upper Darby venue nd Young Americans was recorded at Philly’s Sigma Studios.
