Philadelphia Ranked Top 5 City Gen Z is Moving To
Have you ever gone through a big move? I’m talking about crossing state lines or not being an easy drive away from family and friends. People look to make a move all the time, and what each generation is looking for is different. Boomers are at the point in their life where they want to head to some warmer weather. Gen X and Millennials may be moving due to career changes at this point in their life. They could even be filling a role that was left by a retiring boomer. For the people in Gen Z they’re looking for places that give them an opportunity at home ownership.
In our post COVID world we constantly hear the stories of people leaving the cities. Don’t tell that to Gen Z, because they’re moving in. According to ThisOldHouse.com a few of the most populated cities in the country are going to get a bit more popular with a minor youth movement.
Philadelphia saw an increase in their Gen Z population in 2022 vaulting them up one spot from the Millennial generation moving in in 2012. Millennials put the city at number six on the list a decade ago, and Gen Z’s move gives it another feather in it’s cap. A few other big name cities took the top four spots on the list of where the younger generation is moving to set some roots.
#4 New York City – Even though we always heard about people fleeing NYC during COVID Gen Z-ers moving in gave the big apple a jump of 21 spots.
#3 Boston – Another east coast city in the top five. If Gen Z isn’t careful people are going to they’re all “coastal elites”.
#2 Chicago – I’ve been to Chicago twice and really like the city. I can definitely see the appeal of moving there, until the winter.
#1 Washington D.C. – I’m a bit surprised by D.C. being number one. I probably could’ve had 25 guesses before I thought to say D.C. It is an appealing area for someone in their 20’s with Georgetown, Old Town Alexandria and Arlington, Virginia all right next door.
So over the course of the last decade we’ve seen movement in and out of cities, depending on your age. In the next decade we’ll see if this is a sort of cyclical thing. You move in when you’re younger to get the feel for city life. Then you move out when you’re older because you’ve had enough of it.
