40 Years of Philly Radio Is A Long Time and A Lot of Stuff Has Happened
Today, November 15, 2022, is John DeBella’s 40th anniversary on the radio in Philadelphia. That seriously is an incredible feat. All show long we’ve been celebrating by running old clips, segment and interviews from his time in town, but what better way to measure that longevity than taking a yearly look at things that either happened or were invented after John began his radio career here in Philadelphia.
1982 – Commercial CD Player was invented.
1983 – Sony released it’s Betamax Camcorder.
1984 – Apple MacIntosh Computer created.
1985 – The wreck of the Titanic was discovered.
1986 – Fuji Created the Disposable camera.
1987 – Steve Vassalotti was born!
1988 – Roseanne and the Wonder Years premiered on TV.
1989 – The Berlin Wall was torn down. The Nintendo Game Boy invented.
1990 – “Al Gore invents” the World Wide Web.
1991 – The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Law and Order premiered on TV.
1992 – Johnny Carson retired from the Tonight Show.
1993 – The Phillies lose to the Blue Jays in the World Series.
1994 – OJ Simpson chase and arrest. Nancy Kerrigan attacked before the Olympics.
1995 – The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opens.
1996 – Search engine Ask Jeeves was created. Won’t last long once Google is created.
1997 – The first Harry Potter book is released by J.K. Rowling.
1998 – Google is founded.
1999 – Music downloading and file sharing site Napster is created.
2000 – Tiger Woods becomes the youngest player to win Grand Slam.
2001 – iTunes created by Apple. Wikipedia invented.
2002 – Euro becomes the official currency of the European Union members.
2003 – Do Not Call List created.
2004 – Faceboook launches.
2005 – YouTube is founded. Live 8 concerts happen across the world.
2006 – Steve Irwin dies in a freak accident with a sting ray.
2007 – Apple announces the 1st iPhone
2008 – Phillies win the World Series, Defeating Tampa Bay Rays 4 games to 1.
2009 – Maersk Alabaa hijacking. Eventually made into movie Captain Phillips. Michael Jackson dies.
2010 – Instagram created. First of the Chilean miners rescued after being trapped for 68 days 1 1/2 miles underground
2011 – US Navy seals find and kill Osama Bin laden. Game of Thrones premiered on HBO
2012 – The Mayan calendar ended, the world did not.
2013 – In what should have been a hint as to where the world was heading the words ‘twerk’ and ‘selfie’ were added to the dictionary.
2014 – Ice Bucket Challenge craze to raise awareness and funds for ALS.
2015 – Bruce Jenner becomes Caitlin Jenner.
2016 – Harambe was shot and killed at the Cincinnatti Zoo after a young boy fell into his enclosure. No one saw his death creating a cascade of Harambe memes.
2017 – Oscars best picture winner screw up. La la land was announced, but it was actually Moonlight that won.
2018 – Eagles win their first Super Bowl (2017 season, game played 2/4/18).
2019 – Game of Thrones ended… to the disappointment of many. Kathy Lee retires from Today Show. Avengers Endgame ends the 10 movie Infinity Saga of Marvel Movies.
2020 – Covid Pandemic spreads across the world.
2021 – NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) became a thing. They also stopped becoming a thing.
2022 – In the 1st successful attempt to move an asteroid’s orbit, Nasa crashed a probe into an asteroid.
