In Honor of the Eagles in the Super Bowl, Here’s A Throwback to My Time With the Team in 1977
In honor of the Philadelphia Eagles playing in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, I figured I would do a little throwback to the 1977 Eagles team.
That year was former Eagles head coach and, now, Hall of Fame coach, Dick Vermeil’s second year with the team, and it just so happened it was my first year working for the team.
I was the assistant assistant equipment manager!
It was such a fun experience.
I was 18 years old and fresh out of high school, so getting to hang out with professional football players and be a part of an NFL franchise was surreal.
I even got to travel on every road trip the team would take to opposing cities, which included flying on the team plane.
That was one of the best perks of many.
Here’s the team photo from that year, which was taken at the legendary Veterans Stadium.
What an iconic stadium!
Plus, a ton of iconic Eagles players on the team that year, including Roman Gabriel, Ron Jaworski, Bill Bergey, Wilbert Montgomery, and Tom “Silky” Sullivan!
Oh, and I can’t forget the player responsible for the first Miracle at the Meadowlands, Herm Edwards, who actually made an appearance on-air over at our sister station yesterday, 97.5 The Fanatic.
Perhaps, the most notable player from that team was Vince Papale, thanks to an incredible movie starring Mark Wahlberg, Invincible, which depicted Papale’s one-of-a-kind journey to becoming an NFL player.
I have him circled for you!
Also, If you take a closer look there I am in the fourth row!
Nobody was going to mess with me behind those big offensive linemen!
Take a look at my fancy autograph that I got to sign on the official team photo as well!
Every person who picked up a copy of the November 13, 1977 edition of The Sunday Bulletin got a printout team photo — but more importantly my autograph!
Just kidding about the autograph part, of course!
I had such an incredible time with the team and the rest of the ball boys who worked with me!
Here we are at Widener College in Chester during training camp in 1977.
Hopefully, they are all doing well and are about to enjoy another Super Bowl victory from the Birds on Sunday night!
I hope to see you all on Broad Street around 10:30 p.m. that night!
