Meet My Friend Izzy Who Visited The 102.9 MGK Studios

I made a new friend today.  Her name is Izzy, and she’s from Philadelphia.  Along with Sharon Curley, Izzy visited the 102.9 MGK studios during my show this afternoon (4/5)….

I made a new friend today.  Her name is Izzy, and she's from Philadelphia.  Along with Sharon Curley, Izzy visited the 102.9 MGK studios during my show this afternoon (4/5).

Sharon, who reached out to me a few weeks ago, is with Community Integrated Services, a local non-profit that empowers people with disabilities through opportunities at employment. Sharon told me all about Izzy, and her interest in radio, and I was all too happy to have them come by the studios for a visit.

In addition to being a sweet person, Izzy knows her music! As soon as she arrived, and got settled in the MGK studio, she would identify a song title literally a half second after it came out of the speakers. VERY impressive! Izzy is also a serious business card collector and, as luck would have it, our Program Director Bill Weston was here and was just coming out of his office when our guests arrived. Upon finding out about Izzy's collecting of cards, he was happy to give her one!

Once in the studio, we all chatted for a bit, and I told her all about the equipment we used here at MGK, as well as a little about my background in radio. Of course, anytime some visits the MGK studios, I have to put them to work! It wasn't long before Izzy got to start a song live on the air (it was "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" by Creedence Clearwater Revival) and even introduce one of her favorite songs on MGK, Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight."

In another nice coincidence, our own Tony Harris stopped in the studio, and he and Izzy knew each other! It's a small world, indeed.

Izzy and Sharon were also kind enough to record a podcast with me, to chat all about the work CIS does, and to tell of her experience hanging out with MGK for an afternoon.

I'm not sure who had a better time - Izzy or me. What a joy it was to meet her!

MGK’s Top Rock Albums From March 30, 1980

The month the first MMA competition for actual prize money was held, "Dallas" asked "who shot J.R." on TV, and the Audi Quattro was launched, these were the top 10 rock albums in the country.

10. Love Stinks - J. Geils Band

The J. Geils Band scored their second top 10 with their ninth album, Love Stinks, one of the funniest titles, and songs, I've ever heard. This week it's #10.

9. In The Heat Of The Night - Pat Benatar

The debut album by Pat Benatar made her an instant star, and she hasn't looked back since.  At #9 on March 30, 1980, In The Heat Of The Night.

8. Departure - Journey

It only took a week for Journey to record their sixth album, Departure, with most of the tracks recorded live in the studio.  This was one of them from the album, which was #8 on March 30, 1980.

7. The Long Run - Eagles

It would be the last studio album by the Eagles released for 25 years, but it's a wonderful work.  After peaking at #1, The Long Run drops to #7 on this week's Thursday Top 10 Countdown.

6. Permanent Waves - Rush

Rush wanted to record their seventh studio album at the legendary Trident Studios in London, but the studio time and costs were too high.  They decided on a residential studio in Canada's Laurentian Mountains called "Le Studio," and it became their recording home for the next four albums.  Permanent Waves is our #6 rock album this week.

5. Glass Houses - Billy Joel

We'll see this guy with Stevie Nicks at Lincoln Financial Field on June 16.  I'm sure he'll do a track or two from this album, the #5 rock album on the countdown, Billy Joel's Glass Houses.

4. Bebe Le Strange - Heart

Heart continued their string of successful albums with Bebe Le Strange, their fifth album, and the #4 rock album on March 30, 1980.

3. Damn The Torpedoes - Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers

When Tom Petty's recording contract was transferred to MCA Records after they acquired ABC, lawsuits ensued and things got quite sticky, until Petty signed a new deal with Backstreet Records.  He was then able to release what would become his breakthrough album, Damn The Torpedoes, the #3 rock album on our countdown.

2. Against The Wind - Bob Seger And The Silver Bullet Band

Bob Seger's album Against The Wind is notable for two reasons. First, it was his only #1 album, amazingly.  And it was also the album that finally knocked this week's #1 album out of the top spot!  Against The Wind is held steady on March 30, 1980 at #2.

1. The Wall - Pink Floyd

At the top of the charts this week is the 11th studio album by a legendary British band, and one of the biggest selling albums of all time. It was a concept work, revolving around a character who felt isolated from the world, separated by an imaginary...wall. Not only did this album hit #1, it stayed there for 15 weeks! #1 on March 30, 1980 was the Wall by Pink Floyd.
